New Emerging Team for Research on Suicide Prevention

The New Emerging Team for Research on Suicide Prevention aims to carry out studies assessing risk factors increasing the risk for, and factors protecting from suicide amongst Aboriginal People. The multidisciplinary research team is lead by Dr. Gustavo Turecki and Dr. Laurence Kirmayer. Team investigators include Dr. Cornelia Wieman, Dr. Jack Haggarty, Dr. Johanne Renaud, Dr. Margaret Cargo, and Dr. Rod McCormick.

Project Aims

  • To undertake a suicide follow-back study in Nunavut
  • To undertake a study of resilience mechanisms of Aboriginal youth- healing strategies and resource utilization
  • On the basis of the above, to propose an exploratory intervention program
  • To develop a knowledge transfer strategy based using principles of participatory research
  • To develop capacity in Canada for suicide prevention research in Aboriginal populations.
